We’re thrilled to welcome your new kitten to The Ark Animal Clinic family! Kittens bring so much joy, but they also require special care. This guide outlines essential recommendations for ensuring your kitten’s health and happiness. Reading this information before your appointment will allow us to dedicate more time to addressing your specific questions and concerns.
What to expect At Your First Visit
Vaccines
Vaccinating kittens is crucial for protecting them from common and potentially serious diseases. Our recommended vaccine schedule is designed to provide optimal protection:
- 8 weeks of age: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (FVRCP) – often referred to as the “distemper” vaccine for cats.
- 12 weeks of age: FVRCP booster.
- 16 weeks of age: FVRCP booster and Rabies vaccine.
Vaccine schedules can be adjusted based on previous vaccinations. We will discuss the best plan for your kitten at their appointment.
Fecal Testing & Deworming
Kittens are often born with intestinal parasites. At your kitten’s first visit, we recommend deworming with a broad-spectrum dewormer to eliminate common parasites. We also recommend a fecal examination to check for other parasites, such as Giardia or coccidia. Please bring a fresh stool sample to your appointment for testing.
Diets
Proper nutrition is essential for your kitten’s growth and development. Kitten food should be specifically formulated for kittens and labeled for growth. We recommend feeding a high-quality kitten food until your kitten is approximately one year old.
- Important Note: While grain-free diets have become popular, recent studies have linked some grain-free diets to heart problems in cats and dogs. We recommend discussing dietary options with us to ensure your kitten is on a complete and balanced diet.
Litter Box Training
Kittens are usually easy to litter box train. Here are some helpful tips:
- Provide multiple litter boxes, ideally one per cat plus one extra.
- Place litter boxes in quiet, accessible locations.
- Use a litter that your kitten prefers (most kittens prefer unscented, clumping litter).
- Keep the litter boxes clean.
- If your kitten has accidents outside the box, clean them thoroughly to eliminate odors.
Scratching
Scratching is a natural behavior for cats. To protect your furniture, provide your kitten with scratching posts made of sisal, cardboard, or carpet. You can also try catnip sprays or toys to attract your kitten to the scratching post.
Socialization
Early socialization is vital for kittens. Expose your kitten to a variety of sights, sounds, and experiences in a positive way. This will help them develop into well-adjusted, confident cats.
Playtime
Kittens are playful creatures! Provide them with plenty of toys and opportunities for play. Interactive play sessions will help strengthen your bond with your kitten and provide them with exercise.
Pet Insurance
Consider pet insurance for your kitten while they are young and healthy. This can help protect you from unexpected veterinary costs. Be sure to research different pet insurance providers to find the best plan for your needs.
We are here to help you every step of the way. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions you have about your new kitten’s care. We look forward to meeting you and your new furry friend!
